The first products in a category grab most of the clicks. It’s the law of the storefront: what’s in view sells, what’s on page 3 might as well not exist. And yet in most PrestaShop stores, nobody actually decided that order — it’s just whatever was left over from importing the catalog.
The order nobody chose
PrestaShop places products according to whatever position is saved for each category, or a generic global sort criterion (price, name, newest first). Neither one knows which products actually drive traffic, which ones convert, or which have been sitting dead in the front row for months. The result: your best-selling product can be buried while one with stagnant stock sits at the top of the category.
What PrestaShop gives you out of the box
In the back office, inside each category, you can drag products to fix their position by hand. And in the global settings you can choose a default sort criterion: price, name, date added… It works, but it hits three limits as soon as your catalog grows: there’s no data behind it (you’re sorting on gut feeling), there’s no history (if the change backfires, you have no record of how things were before), and you have to redo it category by category, every time.
Static default order
A manual position set once and never reviewed, or one global criterion (price, name) applied across the whole store. No data, no history, no way back.
Data-driven order with history
Decide with real traffic and rankings in front of you, keep the previous order saved per category, and revert if a change doesn’t work out.
What criteria are actually worth sorting by
- What people search for and click — products with more clicks and impressions in Google deserve to sit at the top.
- What converts — a product that sells well whenever it’s seen should be seen more.
- What ranks — if a product page ranks well for a high-volume keyword, push it up in its category.
- What you want to sell — margin, stock, season: data isn’t everything, business judgment counts too.
💡 So how does all this translate into an actual position for each product? We cover that in which products to feature first in each category: merchandising with your real data.
Sorting with data, without fighting the back office
Zeyvro Merchandiser adds a dual slider to each PrestaShop category: sort by hand with full control, or request an AI-generated order suggestion (Gemini) built from your real data — Search Console, Analytics, and Dinorank if you upload your exports. The module saves the last order applied per category, so if the suggestion doesn’t work out, you’re not starting from scratch — just revert and you’re done. And whatever order you set is also respected in the store’s internal search, not just on the category page.
Frequently asked questions
Does PrestaShop keep a history of my category order?
Not out of the box. If you change positions and results get worse, there’s no native way to go back to the previous order. Zeyvro Merchandiser saves the last order applied per category so you can revert.
Does category order also affect the internal search?
Out of the box, the search engine does its own thing. With Zeyvro Merchandiser, whatever order you apply is also respected in the store’s internal search results.
Do I have to use the AI?
No. The manual slider is always available, whether or not you use Gemini’s suggestion. For the AI suggestion you need your own Gemini (Google) API key; manual mode works without it.
Can I undo an order change?
Yes. The module saves the last order applied in each category, so you always have a way back.
Your storefront shouldn’t be arranged by chance. Put it to work with your own data.
